yuppie assault vehicles

Clay and I never really thought that we’d ever buy an SUV. We like our Honda sedans – It’s just the two of us, and you really can’t beat the gas mileage. The only appealing thing about an SUV for us is that we’d be able to haul stuff from Lowe’s with less difficulty. We’ve strapped a screen door to the roof of the Accord. We’ve also tied down an exterior backdoor for the house (with frame attached) and sheets of plywood on a couple of occasions. Did I mention that we hauled 4500 lbs. of concrete sand in the trunk...not all at once, of course. After all of that, you’d think we would have needed to replace our shocks and the transmission, but she still purrrrrs. Anyway, our Hondas have taken great care of us.

We used to scoff at SUVS – what a waste of space, gas and money. Usually, we see one person driving a Ford Excursion with no passengers. Why?

We know a lot of our friends have switched to SUVS simply for the space, after having kids. We always thought it was funny. Somehow my brother and I survived just fine in our parents’ small car...and my parents never bought a minivan or large vehicle.

But, before you send me hate email, we traded our Civic for a Honda CRV...after much research on Clay’s part. We actually get close to the same gas mileage as our Accord (the manual shift helps in that area). Also, since we carpool to work, we drive the Accord every day and reserve the CRV for weekend Lowe’s projects or camping trips. And, both cars will fit baby car seats in them quite well...oh yeah, did I mention that I’m pregnant and we’ve become those people who buy SUVs because they’re having kids...sort of? What is the world coming to?
